Brian Solis, one of the superstars in social media strategy, spoke at the ASAE Annual Meeting in San Diego last week. He talked about how public relations professionals can still influence opinion and behavior even though mainstream media is in its death throes.

Social and professional networks are having a dramatic impact on trade and professional associations. At the same time, many for-profit companies are trying to emulate associations' traditional ability to build communities and are creating “social networks” for customers and staff.

In July 2008, Association Global Services conducted a survey of associations to determine how they are approaching this fast evolving trend. The survey was completed by 179 association executives who were informed and invited to participate by email, Linkedin, Facebook and word of mouth. Within 48 hours of distributing the survey over 150 associations had responded. The following report highlights the results.

How Blogs and Social Media are Changing Public Relations and the Way it is Practiced

This article reports on a three-year-long international survey of public relations practitioners examining the impact blogs and other social media are having on public relations practice. Findings show these new media are dramatically changing public relations. Results indicate blogs and social media have enhanced what happens in public relations and that social media and traditional mainstream media complement each other. The study also finds the emergence of blogs and social media have changed the way their organizations communicate, especially to external audiences.

Findings suggest social media complement traditional news media, and that blogs and social media influence coverage in traditional news media. The study reports blogs and social media have made communications more instantaneous by encouraging organizations to respond more quickly to criticism.

Association Social Technologies Survey Report

A real good look at where associations of all sizes and types are today in use of social technologies, from Ben Martin, Lindy Dreyer, Jeff De Cagna.

How many associations have adopted social technologies?
Social technologies are still in a stage of infancy in the association community. Although awareness of social technologies is widespread, only a small minority of associations are actively deploying them. About one-half of associations are actively monitoring or commenting in the blogosphere, while only a quarter author their own blogs. One-third of associations have rolled out social networking initiatives, while just 14% are using a wiki.

Why are associations using social technologies?
Connecting members with one another appears to be the primary motivation for associations using social technologies. Of all the reasons for using social networking and blogs, a desire to increase engagement is chief among them. Associations deploying wikis respond that facilitating collaboration is their most important goal.

Who within the association heads up social technology efforts?
Our analysis reveals that marketing and communications staffs are most likely to be responsible for the deployment of social technologies. An examination of "other" responses, however, reveals that responsibility for social technology initiatives is widely distributed in many associations. We find a surprisingly high level of volunteer involvement in social media efforts, including the statistic that members are the most likely to contribute to association blogs, ahead of communications staff and the chief staff executive.
